Timber in Bushfire Prone Areas
More emphasis is put on creating a safe built environment in bushfire-prone areas than ever before. The Black Saturday triggered a revamp of the Bushfire Standard (AS 3959) to safe-guard Australians and their homes from similar catastrophes in the future. The NSW Rural Fire Service released several additional guidelines to AS 3959 meaning that in NSW building regulations vary from the requirements in the Acceptable Construction Manual within the Building Code of Australia (BCA). This led to wide-spread confusion in the industry to which standards or guidelines one has to follow to comply with the BCA. The attached document combines the regulations relevant in NSW and provides the user with easy-to-read directions and which materials can be utilised in which applications dependent on the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL).
